CBD Topicals 101

What is a topical?

Merriam-Webster defines medical topicals as “designed for or involving application to or action on the surface of a part of the body”. Topicals come in a variety of forms including lotions, creams, balms, salves, or sprays. Common topicals include things like Tiger Balm, Biofreeze, or Icy Hot – but CBD topicals are becoming more and more common!

How do CBD topicals work?

You have 2 known cannabinoid receptor types, CB1 and CB2, located in different regions throughout the body. When you smoke or ingest cannabis products, the cannabinoids bind with receptors in the brain. However, when cannabis topicals are applied to the skin, they only interact with receptors in the epidermis and dermis!

Can topicals get you high?

They can’t, regardless of their THC content! Topicals interact with cannabis receptors located in the dermis and do not penetrate into the bloodstream. Our FLOW cream topical is also THC-free, meaning that even if it could enter the bloodstream, it wouldn’t cause any sense of being “high”.

Why choose a topical?

While it’s very common for people to use CBD products like tinctures, gummies, or capsules to manage pain, topicals are a great option for those who are looking for effects that target a specific/localized area. CBD topicals are also popular with folks who don’t enjoy the taste of ingestible CBD products.

What’s unique about Fairwinds FLOW topical?

Our inclusion of ingredients like ceramides & hyaluronic acid makes FLOW great for overall skin health as well as pain relief! Plus, our proprietary Canna Vera extract helps the cream absorb more thoroughly into an affected area.
